About Us Safety and Outcomes

Overview

At Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, we know you have a choice in healthcare providers, and we consider it a privilege to be entrusted with caring for you and your family. We are committed to providing high quality, compassionate care in the safest possible environment.

Health outcomes are the end result of medical care. This includes whether a health issue gets better or worse, the costs of care, and how well patients are satisfied with the care received. Because quality, safety and optimal health outcomes are top priorities at Texas Children's Hospital, we closely monitor data that helps us learn more about how we are doing as a healthcare system. Tracking this information allows us to evaluate our performance and continuously work to make improvements.

The information on this webpage is organized by six nationally recognized areas of healthcare quality for healthcare organizations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). These key areas serve as a framework to guide us and ensure the care we provide for you is:

  • Safe - We are committed to preventing errors and avoiding harm while you are in our care.
  • Effective - We are committed to providing care and services that will be the most beneficial to you, using the best scientific knowledge available.
  • Patient-centered - We are committed to partnering with you in your care, and to respecting your unique needs, expectations, and values.
  • Timely - We are committed to ensuring you have prompt access to care and reducing your wait times.
  • Efficient - We are committed to using resources responsibly.
  • Equitable - We are committed to providing you and all patients the same high quality care.

We believe patients are our partners in care and that sharing hospital quality and safety data with you is important. We want you to feel empowered to ask us questions and to share your thoughts and suggestions.  Our transparency helps keep you informed so that you can feel confident choosing the healthcare provider that best meets your needs and expectations – and helps us stay focused as we continuously strive for excellence.

We measure our progress in each of these areas around you and the care you receive. Following is how we have been reaching our commitment in these six key areas over the last year.

At Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, our doctors, nurses, and staff are continuously working together to identify opportunities to further enhance patient safety. We are committed to providing safe care and eliminating errors and preventable harm.

Here are some of the ways we work to meet this commitment:

  • Daily Safety Brief - Every morning, leaders across the Pavilion come together to focus on keeping patients safe.
  • Safety Rounds - Physician, nursing, and hospital leaders spend time with front-line team members who provide direct patient care to get input on ways we can improve safety for patients and hospital units. Then we work together to put their suggestions into action.
  • Safety Coach Program - Front-line team members receive specialized training to serve as safety leaders on their units.
  • Big Data - Using innovative technology, hospital leaders and staff specializing in quality improvement track, measure, and analyze outcomes to get a comprehensive look at areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.
  • Hospital Acquired Condition Reduction Teams - Special teams of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare experts work together to focus on preventing conditions  to which patients can be susceptible during a hospital stay, such as surgical site infections.  Working together helps us prevent treatment-related infections and other potential hospital-acquired conditions or complications.

Here are some of the ways we work to meet this commitment:

  • Using Evidence-Based Clinical Standards - These recommendations guide essential steps in taking care of patients with specific conditions. Before any guideline is set in place, our team of clinical experts thoroughly reviews the science and carefully considers all the possible benefits and harms of each step in the process.
  • Being Baby-Friendly - This designation means we meet the high standards of care set by global experts for providing effective care for mothers and babies. Our staff is specially trained to help you and your new baby get off to the best possible start from the first moments of your baby’s life.

We use your feedback to continuously improve, measuring ourselves against your expectations, our past performance, and the performance of other leading women’s and children’s hospitals. We value your input, whether you share it with us in person, over the phone, or through anonymous surveys or comment cards.
  • Addressing your concerns - If you have a concern, you can reach the Family Advocacy department any time by calling 832-824-1919. We take your concerns seriously and work together to address any issues that may be affecting your care experience with us.
  • Giving you a place to tell your unique story - We want to hear about you and learn from your perspective. Sharing your experience is powerful, and so is reading the inspiring stories that other patients share.
