About Us Hand Hygiene Adherence Rate

Why is adherence to hand hygiene important?

Preventing the spread of infection is a critical aspect of patient safety. The single most important and effective safety measure at Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women is to make sure our hands are clean before and after each and every patient encounter.

What does hand hygiene adherence rate measure?

Hand hygiene adherence shows the percentage of time that health care workers on inpatient adult units at Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women wash their hands.

What can you do as a patient?

  • Watch this video about hand hygiene.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask everyone to wash their hands before coming in contact with you or your baby. This includes doctors, nurses, or other health care workers as well as your friends and family. The World Health Organization now recommends five distinct moments during patient care when hands should be washed. You are your own and your baby’s best advocate. We encourage you to speak up.
