Texas Children’s Global Health Corps Pediatric Practitioner: Kamuzu Central Hospital, Lilongwe Malawi (GHC-KCH)
Position: We are recruiting a full-time pediatric faculty member to work at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi in conjunction with PACHIMAKE, a Pediatric Emergency Medicine consortium comprised of Baylor Foundation Malawi, Texas Children’s Hospital / Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill / Project Malawi and the University of Utah. Applicants should be Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM), Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM), or General Pediatrics Board Eligible or Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, have specific interest and/or experience working in acute care pediatrics, experience working in an international, resource-limited setting, and excellent interpersonal communication skills. The position will be a combination of provision of direct clinical care in high acuity areas of the Pediatrics Wards at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), education of local healthcare workers, clinical supervision and education of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences pediatric residents, clinical supervision and education of visiting trainees from U.S.-based partners, involvement in research and quality improvement, and administrative responsibilities to strengthen the quality of pediatric inpatient care at KCH.
This position is funded through the Texas Children’s Global Health Corps program and includes the same compensation, benefits, and accountabilities as described above.
Site: Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) is the national referral hospital in the capital city of Lilongwe serving the central region of Malawi. The pediatric ward has approximately 300 beds, admits more than 27,000 patients per year, and manages all medical emergencies for the region. There are three general pediatric wards, a nutritional resuscitation unit, a post-natal nursery and a high acuity ward. KCH is overseen by the Ministry of Health and affiliated with the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.
Background: The goal for this position is to provide a consistent pediatric provider presence, striving to improve pediatric outcomes at KCH. Because the majority of pediatric hospital mortality in resource-limited settings occurs early during hospitalization, the primary focus is on acute clinical care. The involved US-based institutions have been supporting pediatric care in various capacities at KCH since 2005 and have helped decrease the inpatient mortality as well as bolstered the medical education for both US and Malawian trainees. Despite this progress critical gaps in acute care remain.
This position will support PACHIMAKE, which aims to improve the care of acutely ill children through sustainable, bi-directional implementation of effective, coordinated, high-quality clinical, educational, quality improvement and research initiatives. The successful candidate will also provide cross-departmental support and coordination for quality improvement, education, and research.
We are looking for someone with a skill set to support acute care clinical, educational, quality improvement and research initiatives in a global health setting. The interpersonal skills to balance and support relationships between KCH, the Department of Pediatrics at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Baylor Foundation-Malawi, and U.S.-based faculty and trainees are also essential.
Goals:
- Access: to improve the outcomes of acutely ill children at KCH
- Capacity strengthening: to augment the ability of pediatric providers to care for acutely ill children at KCH
- Partnership: to strengthen coordination and management of PACHIMAKE partnership to provide impactful services at KCH
- Improved infrastructure: at KCH for the care of acutely ill children
GHC-KCH Duties and responsibilities
- PACHIMAKE Program Oversight: You will work under the leadership of the Head of Department (HOD) at KCH Pediatrics and ideally alongside U.S.-based PACHIMAKE pediatric emergency medicine specialists to provide clinical, educational and research oversight for the consortium. This includes regular reporting to the HOD and between local staff and U.S.-based leadership as well.
- Clinical Capacity-Strengthening: You will be part of the team of pediatricians who supervise Malawian pediatric residents (MMed candidates), medical officers, interns and clinical officers on the pediatric wards as well as providing direct patient care and participating in call coverage.
- Quality Improvement Work: You will nurture a culture of quality improvement (QI) throughout KCH Pediatrics, and support QI education and program development across pediatric subspecialty areas.
- Medical Trainee Education: As one of the pediatric consultants you will support the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences Masters in Medicine in Pediatrics (MMed) graduate medical education program. You will participate in the education (lectures, bedside teaching and mentorship) of Malawian medical and clinical officers and resident trainees rotating at KCH. You will support curriculum development for the MMed program.
- Mentorship of rotating trainees and faculty: You will participate in the coordination, clinical supervision, orientation, evaluation, and mentorship of visiting US-based trainees and faculty from Baylor College of Medicine (Houston), and other PACHIMAKE Consortium partners (from Cincinnati, Chapel Hill and Salt Lake City), and assist with rotators from other institutions.
- Coordination: You will support coordination of Texas Children’s Global activities across pediatric sub-specialty areas within KCH, and support relationships between KCH, the Department of Pediatrics at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Baylor Foundation Malawi, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Global.
