Pharmacy Residency Programs PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency

The clinical pharmacy specialists group serve as liaisons and resources to the medical services. Providing proactive patient care through development of pharmacotherapy plan and patient education.  They are also mentors and educators to the pharmacists, residents (pharmacy and medical), nurses and patients.

Purpose Statement

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

About the Residency Program

The PGY2 infectious diseases pharmacy residency program at Texas Children’s Hospital was established in 2024. The PGY2 infectious diseases pharmacy residency program is a 12-month ASHP accredited program focused on direct patient care, practice management, and education of healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers. The program is designed to meet the pre-defined program goals and objectives and is tailored based on the resident interests and past experiences. This training program allows residents to gain experience to become authoritative resources in the application, use, research, and optimization of pharmacotherapy in managing infectious diseases and contributing to an antimicrobial stewardship program. Additionally, residents will develop practice management skills used to optimize the medication use process in the management of infectious diseases. Resident experiences allow them to develop skills in the education of learners, healthcare providers, and patients. The program begins on the first Monday of July.

Available Rotations

Required experiences:

  • Two-week rotations:
    • Infection Prevention Experience (Non-Pharmacist Precepted)
    • Microbiology Lab Rotation (Non-Pharmacist Precepted)
  • One-month rotations:
    • Hospital and Department Orientation
      • Antimicrobial Stewardship 1, 2, and 3
      •  ID Consult APP Team
      • ID Consult Teaching Service
      •  Transplant Infectious Diseases
      • General Pediatrics (if needed; resident and residency leadership will discuss)
      • Administration Rotation
  • Longitudinal - 
    • ID Longitudinal Clinic (year-long clinic experiences)
    • ASP Steering Committee
    • TCH Residency Seminar (weekly sessions with TCH residency class and preceptors)
    • TMC ID Forum (weekly educational sessions with all ID PGY2 residents/preceptors in Houston metro area)

Elective experiences:

  • Elective experiences will be tailored to the resident’s interest and preceptor availability
  • May be completed at Texas Children's Hospital or other institution in the Texas Medical Center

Projects and Presentation Requirements

Major Research Project or Quality Improvement Project (one)

  • Work with a preceptor on an interdisciplinary project with the goal of creating a sustained impact on the quality of patient care at Texas Children’s Hospital
  • Present research results at national infectious diseases/antimicrobial stewardship meeting 
  • Submit a formal manuscript for publication

Medication Use Evaluation

  • Conduct a medication use evaluation and present the results with poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
  • Present findings to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
  • Write up summary of the medication use evaluation for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee newsletter

Medical Writing

  • Collaborate with clinical and research faculty to develop a scholarly manuscript suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal 
  • Prepare and submit at least one publication-ready work product (e.g., original research manuscript or review article) using appropriate medical writing and publication standards

Formulary Management

  • Participate in the evaluation of antimicrobials for formulary addition, restriction, or necessary updates through critical appraisal of efficacy, safety, operational, and pharmacoeconomic data
  • Develop a drug monograph or formulary review and present recommendations to applicable committees

Presentations

  • At minimum, three journal clubs
  • One 60-minute pharmacotherapy presentation to the pharmacy department
  • One 30-minute pharmacotherapy or case presentations to the pharmacy department
  • One research conference presentation to the pediatric infectious diseases medical section at Baylor College of Medicine

Committee Involvement

  • Residents will participate in the Texas Children's Hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Steering Committee and serve as the primary pharmacy contact

Staffing Responsibilities

The resident staffing responsibilities include:

  • Staffing every third weekend on Saturday and Sunday
  • Staffing role will be providing infectious diseases clinical services and antimicrobial stewardship services as needed

Teaching Opportunities

  • Student precepting during clinical rotations
  • Residents will also have the opportunity to complete a teaching certificate offered through the University of Houston School of Pharmacy

Salary and Benefits

  • Stipend: $57,200
