Pharmacy Residency Programs PGY1 Pharmacy & PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency with Masters

Commitment to excellence and service is the philosophy of Texas Children’s Hospital Pharmacy Department. The Pharmacy Leadership Team works with the pharmacists, students, and residents to provide an environment that supports learning and growth in leadership and management.

Purpose Statement

PGY1 Program Purpose: PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

About the Residency Program

The ASHP accredited PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency at Texas Children’s Hospital is designated to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities needed for success in pharmacy practice and health-system pharmacy administration. Residents will have the opportunity to function independently as valued members of patient care teams. Residents will gain leadership experience by integrating knowledge and experience in operations and clinical services. A pediatric teaching hospital is able to provide residents with healthcare management training while also providing a focused opportunity to explore the specialized needs of the pediatric population. Upon completion of the program, the resident will have developed the clinical knowledge, business acumen, and professional skills required to become an effective pharmacy leaders in any health care organization.

Graduates of the program will receive a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency certificate and a PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency certification from Texas Children’s Hospital. Additionally, residents of the program earn a Master of Science in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration from the University of Houston College Of Pharmacy. *Several elective rotations may be selected from existing learning experiences available at Texas Children’s Hospital. These rotations are typically 4 weeks in duration. Based on the resident(s)’ goals, interests, skills, and abilities, elective rotations can be customized and developed. Affiliation agreements will need to be completed for elective opportunities outside of Texas Children’s Hospital sites.

Projects and Presentation Requirements

Residents will be expected to complete the following projects during their residency. Additional projects may be assigned over the course of the two-year residency.

PGY1 Research Project or Quality Improvement Project and PGY2 Formal Master’s Thesis Project

  • Work with a mentor on interdisciplinary research project with the goal of publication by the end of your residency year
  • Submit a formal manuscript for publication


  • Formal presentations (examples: pharmacotherapy rounds, platform presentations, and other institutional based presentations)
  • Two journal clubs

Medication and Formulary Management

  • Residents provide support to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee through serving as editor for one edition of the quarterly Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee Newsletter annually
  • Conduct a medication use evaluation with poster presentation of results at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting annually

Staffing Requirements

  • Pharmacy department staffing every 3 weeks (including dispensing and clinical shifts)
  • Manager-On-Call every six weeks (PGY2 only)

Salary and Benefits

The following benefits are available to residents of the pharmacy administration residency:

  • Stipend: PGY1 $52,000; PGY2 $57,200
  • Partial Tuition Compensation
  • Insurance (medical, dental, vision, life)
  • Support provided for conferences/seminars (Examples: ASHP Conference for Leaders, ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, TSHP Annual Seminar)
