Every child needs to PLAY 60®

Did you know that one of every three kids in the United States is obese or overweight? Texas Children’s and the Houston Texans are out to change that by challenging kids of all ages and abilities to be active at least 60 minutes every day.

PLAY 60

PLAY 60 is the National Football League's campaign to encourage kids across the country to get off the sidelines and be active for an hour a day to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity and be healthier. It’s presented locally by Texas Children's Hospital.

Joining the PLAY 60 movement is easy. You can get involved through several fun school programs, contests and community events.

PLAY 60 at home

Indoor activities that can be done at home everyday to stay fit throughout the year:

  • NFL PLAY 60: Huddle up and get moving! Virtual field trip
  • Animal races: Hop like a bunny or frog; squat and waddle like a duck; and so on.
  • Freeze dance: When the music stops, freeze in your pose and hold it until the music begins again.
  • Hallway bowling: Fill up water bottles and use any ball you have.
  • Pushover parents: Plant your feet and see if the kids can budge you. If you move your feet, they win. Stand on one foot to make it easier for little kids.

PLAY 60 programs sponsored by Texas Children’s

Texas Children's Hospital and the Houston Texans participate in several programs to help spread the PLAY 60 message and help kids across Houston get and stay in shape.

Texans PLAY 60 Challenge

This six-week program, which reaches approximately 4,000 middle-school students in the Houston area, was developed with the American Heart Association. It’s designed to get kids moving and excited about developing a healthy lifestyle.

Teachers can access classroom resources to help incorporate fitness into their daily lesson plans, including an online tracker to record students’ physical activity minutes. Then, they can compare their school to others across the nation.

Each school that participates has the chance to win an assembly with the Texans cheerleaders and a Texans player.

Texans PLAY 60 Grants

To ensure that schools have the right tools to integrate healthy activity into the school day, the Houston Texans and Texas Children’s Hospital are proud to award PLAY 60 grants to Houston-area public, private and charter schools in need of additional funding.

Texans Kids Day Game

Each year, we award $40,000 in grants, up to $10,000 per school. With the NFL PLAY 60 platform in mind, schools can apply for grants to help improve their ability to help kids get exercise. Examples include equipment for physical education, sports or after-school programs, field, gymnasium or playground refurbishments; activity trails; and interactive fitness technology installations. This year, in honor of Super Bowl 51, these grants have been super-sized to $50,000 so we can help more schools get the equipment they need to get students moving.

Helping your young athlete make good food choices

Growing bodies need lots of healthy fuel – especially when they’re running, jumping and playing. Active kids should watch what they eat even more closely to keep up their energy and stamina.

But we know it can get complicated. Kids often are picky eaters, tending to prefer ice cream over broccoli. And everyone is so busy, it can be difficult to find a window of time to sit down together for a meal. However, the extra effort will pay off in big way for your child – now and in the future.

Texas Children’s and the Houston Texans are experts at what athletes should eat. Our Healthy eating guide has plenty of tips to help make feeding your child a nutritious diet a little easier. By the way, these tips work for the whole family.
