No. 1 in the Nation

Texas Children’s Heart Transplant Program is one of the largest pediatric heart transplant programs in the nation. Since 1984, Texas Children’s surgeons have performed more than 550 heart transplants in children, a benchmark reached by only a few programs in the United States. The highly experienced team at Texas Children’s has transplanted hearts in children from newborns to young adults. Our Heart Transplant Program is backed by all the resources of Texas Children’s Heart Center, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report. The transplant team is dedicated to providing your child with excellent medical care, timely communication and family-centered education.

A Dedicated Multidisciplinary Team

Imagine a mighty team of experts — from heart transplant surgeons to pediatric cardiologists to transplant coordinators and dietitians, child-life specialists, social workers, pharmacists and physical and occupational therapists — all focused on your child’s care. That’s what you get at Texas Children’s. Our heart transplant program utilizes more than 40 different subspecialties, ensuring every part of your child’s care is addressed. Our dedicated heart transplant team sees some of the rarest and most complex cases in the world.

Bridge to Transplant

Whether your child is in end-stage heart failure or has a congenital heart disease not treatable by medicines or conventional surgery, our goal is to not only improve your child’s quality of life but to help them thrive before transplant. For children who need circulatory support until a transplant can be received, we offer ventricular assist device placement tailored to your child's size, diagnosis and needs for both short- and long-term assistance. Texas Children’s also has one of the busiest and most successful  Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) programs in the country, which can be used as a life-prolonging bridge to heart or lung transplantation.
