Our Same-Day Endoscopy (SDE) Program is designed for eligible children with positive celiac blood tests. This streamlined pathway combines a specialist consultation and diagnostic endoscopy in a single visit, helping families receive answers sooner and begin appropriate care without unnecessary delays.
What to Expect
Once we receive your child's referral, a member of our Celiac Disease Program team will contact your family to explain the next steps and determine whether the Same-Day Endoscopy pathway is the most appropriate option. Some children may require an additional anesthesia evaluation (PASS clinic hyperlink) before the procedure to ensure the safest possible care.
On the day of your visit:
Meet with a pediatric gastroenterologist to review your child's history, symptoms, and test results.
Later that day, your child will undergo an upper endoscopy while comfortably asleep under anesthesia.
Before the procedure, you'll meet the care team—including your gastroenterologist, anesthesiologist, nurses, and child life specialists—and have an opportunity to ask questions.
After the procedure, your child will recover while the gastroenterologist reviews the initial findings with you. Most children go home the same day, return to their usual activities within 24 hours, and have a follow-up telemedicine visit 1–2 weeks later to review the biopsy results.
If celiac disease is confirmed, we'll begin comprehensive long-term care, including specialized gluten-free nutrition education and ongoing follow-up. If celiac disease is not confirmed, we'll continue working with your family to determine the next steps in your child's evaluation.
