Get to know Lauren D. Scherer, MD
Dr. Lauren Scherer completed her pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training in 2020. She is board-certified in General Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. She enjoys taking care of all children with blood and cancer disorders. However, her area of interest is pediatric leukemia. Specifically, her research seeks to identify new therapies for patients with difficult to treat leukemia.
Dr. Scherer first developed a passion for oncology during her residency training at Indiana University where she was compelled by the families and patients she encountered to pursue a career dedicated to caring for children with cancer and pursuing research to further understand these diseases further and improve treatments.
Dr. Scherer spent time abroad throughout her high school and undergraduate training working in medical clinics in Central America and the Caribbean. Through these experiences, she decided to pursue a career in medicine, with the goal of one day leading such efforts to provide healthcare globally.
During her medical school and residency training, she spent time in Africa working in medical clinics and quickly became interested in pediatric hematology/oncology, a field that presents unique challenges abroad and at home. Within her home institution, she also felt drawn to this field as it intertwined her love of caring for children and their families with complex medical care and innovative research. While all aspects of the field were rewarding, she was particularly interested in leukemia and new therapies for relapsed and refractory patients. This led her to Texas Children's Hospital where she is currently working on immunotherapy for T-cell leukemia with mentors Dr. Maksim Mamonkin and Dr. Malcolm Brenner.
