Get to know Adam M. Vogel, MD
Dr. Adam Vogel was born and raised in Hauppauge, New York. As a child and teenager he had frequent visits to his family pediatrician which, combined with an interested in biologic sciences evolved into a desire to pursue a career in medicine and to help sick children. His passion for problem solving and improving medical care was further enhanced as a student at Northwestern University as he completed his undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering. In medical school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Dr. Vogel’s desire to care for children as a pediatrician shifted somewhat when he became absolutely excited about the field of general surgery. These interests morphed into a desire to become a pediatric surgeon and led him to complete a residency in general surgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center, a research fellowship in clinical and translational vascular anomalies at Boston Children’s Hospital, and eventually a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. During his surgical residency and pediatric surgery fellowship, Dr. Vogel develop a devotion for caring for critically ill children which led him to complete an additional fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Texas Health Science center at Houston.
Dr. Vogel is a pediatric surgeon and surgical intensivist with interest and expertise in all aspects of neonatal and pediatric general and thoracic surgery with a focus on complex gastrointestinal disease, endocrine disease, vascular anomalies, and pediatric trauma. He has a particular clinical interest in the translation and application of minimally invasive and multidisciplinary techniques to solving complex surgical problems. As a surgical intensivist he has a particular focus on the care of critically ill patients including those receiving extracorporeal life support (ECLS or ECMO) and those suffering from complex multisystem trauma. Dr. Vogel believes in proactive, compassionate, collaborative medical and surgical care involving patients, their families, and medical professionals.

Research interests
Dr. Vogel’s research focuses on improving clinical outcomes in critically ill children. With respect to pediatric trauma, he investigates the use of viscoelastic monitoring techniques in goal directed hemostatic resuscitation and massive transfusion to improve outcomes in severely injured patients. With respect to extracorporeal life support (ECLS or ECMO), his research focuses on the impact of nutritional adequacy on outcomes as well as techniques for optimizing systemic anticoagulation and mechanical ventilation during ECLS. Dr. Vogel is an active participant in several, multicenter collaborative research networks whose goal is to improve the care and outcomes of pediatric surgical patients.
