Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program

The first of its kind in Houston and the Southwest, Texas Children's Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD: including Crohn’s or Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis). We also treat other disorders with chronic diarrhea in pediatric patients, such as recurrent Clostridium difficile infection.

Our program offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as whole exome sequencing, a wide array of endoscopic investigations including enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy, and MRI enterography. We are a pediatric center for fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in the treatment of recurrent Clostridium difficile infection, which is supported by the state-of-the-art Texas Children’s Microbiome Center. Our dietitians assist with nutritional therapies for IBD including exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) and the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD). Our program has extensive experience with biologic therapies including infliximab, adalimumab, vedolizumab and ustekinumab.

Our program actively participates in national and international organizations focusing on pediatric IBD care such the NASPGHAN IBD Committee, the Pediatric Resource Organization for Kids with Inflammatory Intestinal Diseases, the Improve Care Now collaboration, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, and the Pediatric IBD Foundation

We are committed to improving the lives of our patients through diverse efforts beyond clinical care, such as organizing the annual Camp Survived it All (Camp SIA).
