A therapy service provided by a specialized Physical Therapist that address pelvic floor dysfunction. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that lay at the bottom of your pelvis and support the pelvic organs, such as your bladder and bowel. These muscles need to work together to control the release of Urine or Stool and to delay emptying until it is convenient. At times, Pelvic floor muscles can become dysfunctional and learn bad habits, which can lead to painful or embarrassing symptoms, such as leaking or smearing of urine or stool.
In pelvic floor physical therapy, your child will work with their physical therapist in order to learn how to relax or strengthen their pelvic floor and surrounding muscles in order to have improved control over bowel and bladder function.
What to expect on the first visit
The Physical Therapist will first talk with you and your child about their symptoms and main concerns. This time allows the therapist to build open communication and rapport with you and your child. Following discussion, an assessment of your child’s breathing mechanics, posture, strength, coordination, and mobility will occur. Throughout this assessment, education regarding tips and tricks, as well as exercises may be given for you to complete at home with your child to ensure progress and success with pelvic floor physical therapy.
