Get to know Simon P. Kelley, MBChB, PhD, FRCS (Tr and Orth)
Dr. Kelley has an internationally recognized practice in pediatric hip surgery, limb reconstruction and trauma surgery. His areas of expertise include the operative and nonoperative treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), and limb lengthening, deformity correction, and joint reconstruction procedures for congenital limb differences and developmental or acquired limb deformities, including growth problems following severe injuries in childhood.
Dr. Kelley leads a clinical research program focused on improving clinical outcomes in the treatment of DDH through clinical trials, process improvement, simulation and education leading to simplified evidence-based pathways of care that have been widely published in peer-reviewed journals and adopted in centers around the world. He leads contributions to the Global Hip Dysplasia Registry, collaborating on nationally funded multicenter clinical trials. In addition, Dr. Kelley also has expertise and academic interest in perioperative resource allocation and developed a program to achieve ethical and timely access to surgery for children in under resourced environments in his previous role as Associate Chief of Perioperative Services-Clinical Operations, at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.
Dr. Kelley serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics, is a past president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society (CORS), and is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI). Dr. Kelley has been invited to speak at numerous national and international conferences on topics relating to his research and clinical expertise, and he has trained and mentored over 90 pediatric orthopedic surgeons from around the world through his role as the Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship Program Director at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto during the first 15 years of his career.
Dr. Kelley is well known by the patients and families he has had the privilege to care for, for his exceptional bedside manner, his kind compassionate approach, giving families the time they need to ask questions about their diagnoses and treatments, and for his ability to communicate complex problems in an easy-to-understand manner.
