Personal Statement
Shelby’s journey in pediatric rheumatology began at age 2 when she was diagnosed with juvenile psoriatic arthritis. After seeing the depth and importance of the field as a patient, she developed an unrelenting passion to give back to the field that treated her throughout childhood. “It is a blessing to become a provider and serve the pediatric rheumatology patients at Texas Children’s,” she says. “I look forward each day to fostering a connection with each patient and family.”
Shelby’s philosophy of care is to instill confidence and hope in every patient regardless of their diagnosis by providing holistic, patient-centered care with a humble, sympathetic and positive attitude. She considers herself a lifelong learner and is involved with many organizations striving to improve the field of pediatric rheumatology and patient and family experiences. In the future, Shelby hopes to increase access for advanced practice providers to join the field of pediatric rheumatology, find new ways to improve individual patient experiences through quality improvement research and empower patients to participate in their own care, especially through transition projects for patients graduating to adult care.
