Get to know Luc Joyeux, MD, PhD
Dr. Joyeux was born in Montpellier, France in a family that has produced three generations of surgeons. He developed a special interest in children's care and research, always questioning himself and current medical knowledge to solve medical problems and improve care. He trained in Dijon, Paris, and London, becoming a board-certified general pediatric surgeon in France and practicing in France and Belgium. He completed a PhD and training in fetal surgery in Leuven, Belgium, the largest research and clinical fetal center in Europe, and was appointed to the position of fetal surgeon at that center.
He is experienced in managing standard neonatal, pediatric abdominal, thoracic and fetal surgical conditions and is licensed in Texas as a general pediatric surgeon and fetal surgeon. He is also an international translational research scientist with expertise in bringing surgical innovations to fetal and pediatric patients.
Dr Joyeux's main research interests are to develop large animal disease models for fetal conditions amenable to surgery; fetoscopic surgery for spina bifida, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and complex gastroschisis; fetal surgery for vein of Galen malformation; surgical training, learning curve and competency analyses in fetal and pediatric surgeries; and cost-effectiveness in surgery. He is also developing a patented biomedical device to completely close port sites in fetal, pediatric and adult laparoscopic surgeries.
Dr Joyeux is passionate about caring for young patients - especially babies in the womb - and their parents and families, and developing new surgical treatments to improve their quality of life. "Being blessed with an amazing wife and five wonderful children, I always listen to the patient and their families, and consider and treat each patient like my own children." he says.
