Get to know John Bickel, LCSW-S
John has practiced as a social worker since 1998, working in psychotherapy, medical social work and administration over that period. The focus of his work has been on youth experiencing maltreatment, adolescent mental health (including suicidal behavior and ideation) as well as non-suicidal self-injury and social work practice development. Clinically, he has focused on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy models and Mentalization-Based Treatment in the treatment of mental health challenges in young people. Serving as the Program Coordinator of LCSW Supervision at the Texas Children's Hospital Medical Center, he seeks to help develop the next generation of clinicians in the community.
He is currently finishing his Ph.D. at the University of Houston writing a dissertation looking at the moderating effects of mentalization on the resiliency of children who have witnessed intimate partner violence against a parent or caretaker.
Personal Statement
I am committed to providing quality mental health services to individuals using modern evidence-based practices and technology. I am committed to the development of effective interventions and strategies aimed at improving the lives of people. I am committed to the training of the next generation of clinical social workers who will provide these services well into the future.
