Dr. Gladstone Airewele is a Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and a key leader in Texas Children’s Global HOPE (Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Excellence) program. Global HOPE aims to transform pediatric cancer and blood disorder care in resource-limited settings, particularly across sub-Saharan Africa, through capacity building, education, and clinical excellence.
A board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Airewele specializes in classical hematology with a focus on sickle cell disease (SCD). As the leader of the Angola Sickle Cell Initiative (2013–2019), he directed large-scale newborn screening programs and spearheaded the training of thousands of local healthcare professionals in SCD management. Since 2017, Dr. Airewele has been instrumental in establishing and advancing pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship programs in Uganda and Tanzania, training a new generation of pediatric hematologists in East Africa. His current work focuses on improving early diagnosis and management of SCD in Africa, alongside the innovative use of virtual technologies to enhance the training of physicians and healthcare workers across the continent.
Dr. Airewele received his medical degree from the University Of Benin School Of Medicine in Nigeria, completed his pediatric residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey, and undertook fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. During his fellowship, he conducted epidemiological research and earned a Master of Public Health from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health.
Certified in pediatric hematology-oncology by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Airewele is committed to advancing global child health by adapting proven interventions to effectively manage patients in low-resource settings through innovative research and education.
