Get to know Eric H. Chiou, MD
Dr. Eric Chiou is a pediatric gastroenterologist with a clinical focus on neurogastroenterology and motility disorders, aerodigestive disorders, and eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders. The current focus of his research is on disorders of esophageal motility in children, including conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Despite the prevalence of GERD, there are still many unanswered questions regarding its diagnosis and management in patients with aerodigestive disorders, in particular regarding extra-intestinal manifestations of GERD affecting the airways and lungs such as asthma, otitis media, sleep apnea, chronic laryngitis and development of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome in lung transplant recipients.
Dr. Chiou’s current research has provided evidence that clinical coordination between multiple subspecialists for the diagnosis and management of patients with complex airway and digestive tract disorders can improve patient care. Specifically, combining multiple endoscopic evaluations under a single general anesthesia episode reduces the risk of complications associated with general anesthesia and provides a care model that improves quality of care and reduces health care costs at the same time.
Additional areas of his clinical and research interest include motility disorders, such as esophageal achalasia and gastroparesis, as well as disorders of gut-brain interaction, such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional abdominal pain.
