Dr. Bauer believes in family-centered, compassionate care for his patients. He does his best to educate patients and families on their condition in order to make them part of the care team and decision-making process.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Bauer’s clinical interests include the care and treatment of children with complex craniofacial disorders including craniosynostosis, Chiari malformation, syringomyelia, basilar invagination, cranio-cervical settling, cranio-cervical instability, complex spinal instability including post traumatic and congenital deformity, infantile, juvenile, and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, complex spinal instrumentation, surgical treatment of spasticity including selective dorsal rhizotomy and baclofen pump, congenital brain and spine malformations, spina bifida, tethered spinal cord, myelomeningocele, lipomyelomeningocele, split spinal cord malformation, arachnoid cyst, dermal sinus tract, encephalocele, brain and spine tumors, vascular malformations of the brain and spine, and the surgical treatment of epilepsy including open and minimally invasive treatment options.

Research interests
Dr. Bauer is an expert in the production of clinical practice guidelines. He is chair of the national guidelines committee of the AANS/CNS Section of Neurological Surgery, and he has helped produce guidelines on many topics including hydrocephalus, plagiocephaly, myelomeningocele, and Chiari malformation. He collaborates with other organizations, and he is co-author on upcoming guidelines for the surgical treatment of epilepsy with the American Epilepsy Society, diagnosis of brain death with the American Academy of Neurology, and transfusion of blood products after traumatic brain injury with a multi-society collaborative. Through his research, Dr. Bauer advocates nationally for standardized, high-level surgical care based on the best available medical evidence.
