The Division of Anatomic Pathology is comprised of a team of board-certified pathologists with combined expertise in all aspects of pediatric surgical pathology with specialists in bone and soft tissue, cardiac/congenital heart, central nervous system/nerve/muscle, dermatopathology, electron microscopy, gastrointestinal/liver, lymph node, placenta, and renal pathology. We also offer expertise in pediatric, adolescent, and adult gynecologic pathology. Our division offers an active consultative service to guide diagnosis and therapy for women and children locally, nationally, and worldwide.

The mission of the Texas Children’s Hospital autopsy service is to provide comprehensive postmortem investigations to provide medical answers and closure to grieving families. Our faculty and staff are dedicated professionals committed to the understanding of the manifestations of human diseases, seeking to enhance diagnosis, treatment and possible disease prevention. Postmortem examinations are performed only with the permission of the patient’s family or guardian and are conducted in a manner that accommodates their wishes and without interfering with memorial services. We provide autopsy services for patients at Texas Children's Hospital and consult autopsy services for other facilities.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a biopsy technique used to sample abnormal tissues with minimal discomfort for the patient. The cytopathology service provides rapid onsite evaluation (ROSE) to check the cellular content and adequacy of FNA biopsies, ensuring diagnostic material is recovered and additional material is collected for ancillary studies such microbiology cultures, flow cytometry or molecular studies.

The gynecologic pathology section at the TCH Pavilion for Women provides interpretation of surgical pathology specimens, with a sub-specialty focus on the female genital tract. The service provides diagnostic support for surgical procedures in the areas of gynecology, fertility, and gynecologic tumors across the entire spectrum from adolescence through post-menopause. The pathologists are involved in intraoperative consultations, interdisciplinary gynecologic oncology tumor board conferences, and clinical trial programs. The gynecology pathology service also reviews specimens from patients referred to Texas Children's Hospital for further management, as well as from other pathologists for second opinion. The service participates in the Baylor residency and fellowship education programs.

The Neuropathology and Molecular Neuropathology Laboratories offer genomic testing for pediatric and adult brain tumors in accordance with the revised World Health Organization (WHO) CNS tumor classification. The laboratory developed new investigative modalities on muscle biopsies including muscular dystrophy protein panel testing and adjunctive immunofluorescence tools for the diagnosis of mitochondrial myopathies. Our board certified neuropathologists also specialize in neurooncology, epilepsy, developmental neuropathology and neuromuscular pathology.

The Perinatal and Placental Pathology Section provides inhouse and consultative services for the examination of placentas and products of conception, as well as comprehensive fetal and neonatal postmortem examinations. The division has two full-time board certified Pediatric Pathologists and in addition to clinical services also provides education/training to fellows and residents and collaborative research support.
