Our approach to care A bridge to successful transplants
If your child needs a kidney transplant, there is a waiting period while a suitable donor kidney is found. During this time, your child may be started on dialysis. At Texas Children’s, we also offer continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for children who can’t tolerate standard hemodialysis, with supportive care provided by our Pediatric Dialysis Program. Our team has expertise in performing acute and chronic hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and plasmapheresis for children of all ages and sizes from infant to adolescent.
Texas Children’s is one of the few pediatric institutions that offers molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) therapy, an albumin/charcoal-based dialysis that requires specialized expertise to provide. Special filters in the MARS machine remove toxins that bind to albumin and other larger proteins that typical kidney dialysis filters can’t remove. This increased level of expertise and experience helps improve patient outcomes.
