Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry Division

The Pediatric Dentistry Division at Texas Children’s specifically treats children with special needs and complex medical issues who are 14 years old or younger. We provide a full range of dental procedures to improve our patients’ health and overall wellbeing in a “calm setting using which relaxation techniques”.

To provide the highest level of coordinated patient care, our dental specialists work closely with many of the surgical and medical divisions at Texas Children’s, including Texas Children’s Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Heart Center and the Department of Plastic Surgery. Patients may be treated as outpatients, inpatients or in operating rooms.

Texas Children’s is one of only a few hospitals in the nation with a Pediatric Dentistry Division. Because of the value we place on advanced education in pediatric dentistry, our partnership with the University of Texas School of Dentistry gives residents experience with treating special needs patients.

Before making an appointment

Because our clinic focuses on the dentistry needs of special needs children with existing medical conditions, all patients need a referral from a physician, such as a pediatrician, primary care provider or specialist, to document underlying health conditions. These underlying pre-existing health conditions include:

  • Heart conditions
  • Neurological conditions like autism, cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities
  • Cancer or malignancy
  • Please call our clinic if your child has other health conditions that would make going to a dental office difficult. We can determine if your child qualifies for treatment by our dental professionals.
