Texas Children's Pavilion for Women Completes Transformational Expansion, Enhancing Care for High-Risk Mothers and Babies

(HOUSTON, TX — July 30, 2026) — Texas Children's Pavilion for Women has completed its multi-year expansion, opening an expanded Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinic, four dedicated Cesarean-section operating rooms and a specialized Obstetrics-Gynecology (OB/GYN) high-risk unit to strengthen care for the most medically complex pregnancies and deliveries.  

The milestone marks the culmination of a more than $200 million investment that began in 2021 to expand access to highly specialized care for mothers, babies and families across Texas and beyond.  

"This expansion reflects our commitment to providing the highest level of care for women with the most complex pregnancies and the babies who depend on us," said Dr. Michael Belfort, Obstetrician and Gynecologist-in-Chief at Texas Children's and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine. "By bringing together expanded maternal-fetal medicine services, advanced surgical capabilities, specialized critical care and family-centered spaces, we're able to care for patients throughout every stage of their journey—all under one roof."  

The expanded MFM clinic increases capacity for high-risk pregnancies with 16 exam rooms, two ultrasound rooms and 10 non-stress test bays. As home to the nation's largest Maternal-Fetal Medicine practice, Texas Children's provides seamless care from prenatal diagnosis through delivery and postpartum recovery. 

The new OB/GYN high-risk unit provides comprehensive care for women with the most complex pregnancies—from advanced prenatal monitoring through delivery and postpartum recovery. Staffed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists, critical care physicians and specially trained nurses, the unit provides specialized care for conditions such as maternal cardiac disease and medical and surgical complications of pregnancy. 

Four state-of-the-art Cesarean-section operating rooms have also been added, increasing surgical capacity to better serve women requiring specialized obstetrical care. 

For patients like mother Louise Nelson, this advanced care can be lifesaving; after a parvovirus diagnosis, Louise received three intrauterine blood transfusions that helped save her unborn child. 

"When I learned my baby was critically ill, we dropped everything and drove eight hours to Texas Children's because it was our best chance to save her life," said Louise. "The care we received from the Maternal Fetal Medicine team gave us hope during the most terrifying time of our lives. Knowing Texas Children's is continuing to invest in expanding these services means more families like ours will have access to the specialized care that can truly make the difference between heartbreak and hope."   

Overall Expansion Highlights: 

• Added 12 private NICU rooms and a 16-bed mother-baby unit with NICU Couplet Care rooms, allowing mothers and newborns receiving specialized care to remain together. 
• Expanded outpatient women's health services through Pavilion Tower II, including obstetrics, gynecology, physical therapy, reproductive psychiatry, and maternal-fetal care. 
• Strengthened Texas Children's leadership in maternal and newborn care as home to the nation's largest Level IV NICU and a Level IV maternal care facility for the most complex pregnancies and newborn conditions.  

Since opening in 2012, Texas Children's Pavilion for Women has become an internationally recognized destination for comprehensive women's, maternal and newborn care. Home to more than 10 women's specialty programs and clinics, the Pavilion delivers more than 6,000 babies annually, performs over 4,700 OB/GYN surgeries each year and provides more than 47,000 ultrasounds.
