Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center Hosts Alex's Lemonade Stand Event

Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center patients recently had the opportunity to become business owners for a day during a special Alex’s Lemonade Stand event. Attended by patients in the Center’s Inpatient and Bone Marrow Transplant Units, this experience is designed to bring learning, creativity and fun to the hospital environment.

After taking a “loan” from a bank set up by staff, the children used play money to purchase lemonade kits and launch their own lemonade stand businesses. Throughout the event, they served refreshing lemonade to nurses, staff and other customers who stopped by to support their efforts.

As they ran their stands, patients practiced real-world skills including money management, decision-making and problem-solving. They also had the chance to determine how best to use their earnings, whether by continuing to invest in their businesses or saving toward rewards.

The event concluded with a prize shop, where participants could exchange their hard-earned money for prizes ranging from candy to LEGO sets. For many of the children, the experience offered a chance to step outside their daily routines, interact with others and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing their work pay off.

Activities like this help create meaningful opportunities for children to learn, connect and build confidence throughout their treatment journey.
