Sartain, Yee receive grant for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome
Awards

Drs. Sarah Sartain and Andrew Yee at Texas Children’s Hospital received an R21 from The National Institutes of Health. The funding will enable exploratory research into the role of tissue kallikrein proteases in infectious and immunologic diseases such as STEC-HUS (Shiga toxin E. coli Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome).
STEC-HUS affects around one child per 100,000 in the United States. This life-threatening condition, which is most frequently triggered by exposure to bacteria in contaminated food or water, can lead to kidney failure and other long-term complications.
