Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center
Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center has numerous clinical sites at Texas Children’s Hospital: an outpatient clinic, a 58-bed inpatient unit, and a 25-bed bone marrow transplantation/stem cell transplant inpatient unit, and a bone marrow/stem cell transplant outpatient clinic.
Lester and Sue Smith Outpatient Cancer and Hematology Clinic. Our outpatient clinic, located in the 17-story Wallace Tower, is the Texas Children's Hospital ambulatory care building that opened in fall 2001. The 36,000-square-foot outpatient clinic houses 25 outpatient chemotherapy treatment areas, a satellite pharmacy, 23 examination rooms, four procedure rooms, four acute care rooms, five day hospital rooms (Urgent Care Bay), an activity area, centralized team stations, and a large family lounge staffed by volunteers from the Ronald McDonald House of Houston.
Cancer and Hematology Inpatient Unit. Our 58-bed inpatient unit for children with cancer and hematological diseases, is located on the 7th and 9th floors of the West Tower at Texas Children's Hospital. Both floors feature a large family lounge sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House of Houston.
Bone Marrow / Stem Cell Transplant Inpatient Unit and Outpatient Clinic. The Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Program is also housed in a combined outpatient and inpatient unit in the Texas Children's Hospital West Tower. Our state-of-the-art, 25-bed inpatient transplant unit is among the largest of its kind in the Southwestern United States and focuses exclusively on transplantation and cell therapy. The inpatient unit, furnished with such specialized equipment such as a unit-wide HEPA filter, which sterilizes the air and allows children to leave their rooms. This HEPA filtering system allows caregivers to eliminate gowns, masks and gloves within the unit, thus decreasing the physical barriers often associated with caring for these children.
Other locations. Within the Greater Houston area, facilities for hematology-oncology patients are also provided at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus and Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands. Outside of Houston, the Vannie Cook Children's Clinic in McAllen, Texas, offers advanced treatments and diagnostics from Texas Children’s/Baylor College of Medicine physicians in the only comprehensive pediatric cancer and hematology center in South Texas.
Texas Children's Hospital
Texas Children’s Hospital is the primary pediatric teaching hospital of Baylor College of Medicine. Located in the Texas Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital is a full-care pediatric facility, which provides inpatient and outpatient care in more than 42 specialties and subspecialties. The hospital and its Integrated Delivery System employs more 6,000 people, has over 1,500 physicians on its medical staff, and records more than 22,000 admissions, 82,000 EC visits and 190,000 clinic visits annually. The hospital consists of a four-building complex: the Abercrombie Building, devoted to a variety of administrative and patient-oriented uses; the West Tower, where the emergency center, critical care, operating rooms, BMT, and Hematology/Oncology units are located; the 17-story Wallace Tower, which houses all outpatient clinics; and the Children’s Nutrition Research Center, dedicated to nutrition research in the neonate, infant and child—a joint venture between Texas Children’s, Baylor College of Medicine and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The 20-story Feigin Tower is dedicated to research, and provides an additional 200,000 square feet of space for state-of-the-art pediatric investigation, with special emphasis on cancer and cell and gene therapy (approximately 30,000 square feet).
Texas Children’s Hospital recently underwent a $1.5 billion expansion. In addition to the Feigin Tower renovations, the new facilities include: the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, a 13-floor facility; Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, a 15-floor facility; Legacy Tower, Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus and Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands.
Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine is ranked among the top 25 medical schools for research in the country and is the only private medical school in the Southwest. Baylor College of Medicine receives more than $400 million in total research support. The bulk of the research support, $344 million, is funded from federal sources, making BCM among the top U.S. medical schools receiving federal funding.
Founded in 1900, Baylor College of Medicine has grown into a medical institution widely respected for excellence in education, research and patient care. The patient care services of Baylor College of Medicine extend to over 20 institutions in Houston.
In addition to Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor maintains affiliations with 6 other area hospitals which have a combined total of over 4,000 beds. Baylor College of Medicine also provides medical services for six of the Harris County Hospital District community health centers and the Thomas Street AIDS Clinic. The College collaborates with the Menninger Clinic for the treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Baylor attracts students from around the world. Currently enrolled are 698 medical students, 608 graduate students, 911 postdoctoral fellows, 156 allied health students and 943 resident physicians pursuing specialty training.
In addition to Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, Baylor College of Medicine has more than 90 research and patient care centers, including: the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service Children’s Nutrition Research Center, the DeBakey Heart Center, the Brown Foundation Human Neuroimaging Laboratory, the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center, the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, the Breast Center, a unit of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Child Health Research Center, the Huffington Center on Aging, the Center for AIDS Research, and federally funded units that collectively form an Influenza Research Center.

The Department of Pediatrics, one of the nation's largest, most diverse, and most successful pediatric program, plays a preeminent role in providing the highest quality comprehensive pediatric healthcare, research and education available. The department is committed to providing superior programs of instruction for medical students and residents, advancing specialty knowledge in the medical sciences, particularly as it relates to the health problems of children, and maintaining its role as a major contributor to research training and scientific activities that enhance the health of children everywhere.

With 162 buildings on the main campus alone, The Texas Medical Center in Houston is the largest medical center in the world. Its 49 member institutions are dedicated to the highest standards of patient and preventive care, research education, and the well-being of local, national and international communities.
14 renowned hospitals and 21 academic institutions, 3 medical schools, 6 nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, pharmacy, and virtually all of the health-related careers are represented. More heart surgeries are performed in the Texas Medical Center than anywhere else in the world. Additionally, the Texas Medical Center is the home to the largest and of one of the first-established, air emergency service. The Texas Medical Center was also the originator of a very successful inter-institutional transplant program.
