Personal Statement
Safiya Nurse is an occupational therapist providing services to patients who are at high risk for developmental delays due to marked prematurity or delays in fine motor skills, upper extremity dysfunction, visual perceptual difficulties, oral motor skills or activities related to daily living skills (i.e., bathing, dressing or feeding). Safiya works with patients whose diagnoses include head trauma, stroke, failure to thrive, brachial plexus injury, feeding and swallowing disorders and many others.
Prior to joining Texas Children’s in 2021, Safiya provided occupational therapy to patients at Kids Developmental Clinic in Houston and Ivy Rehab for Kids in Chesapeake, Virginia. She first became interested in the field of occupational therapy as a summer student at Bermuda Hospital, where she closely followed a hand therapist and developed a fondness for the profession. She also worked with the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute in Bermuda, an organization providing mental health services, and gained experience working with patients in the local community.
From Ms. Nurse:
My philosophy of care was formed around a quote I admire by O. Ivr Lovaas, which says, “If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn.” I do my best to provide patient-centered care. Providing education that helps our patients improve is essential.
Aside from work, I enjoy dance, art and pilates.
Clinical Interests:
Feeding therapy, Sensory integration/processing, Vision therapy
