Get to know Joseph Lubega, MD, MPH, CPE
Dr. Joseph Lubega is internationally recognized as a leader in global efforts to cure and improve the quality of life of children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other blood diseases.
With Texas Children’s Hospital’s Global HOPE Program, he led the establishment of the first university-accredited pediatric hematology and oncology specialist training programs in Eastern Africa, which have trained 35 of the pioneer specialists from across Africa.
Dr. Lubega serves as editorial board member of two of the leading medical journals dedicated to childhood cancer and blood diseases, namely Pediatric Blood and Cancer, and Pediatric Hematology & Oncology. He is a member of the US Pharmacopeia expert committee and past president of American Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology’s global special interest group. His pioneering leadership in global childhood cancer was recognized by The Lancet Oncology in 2024 in the journal’s Pioneers feature.
Dr. Lubega received his medical degree from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. He has broad experience in health systems having trained and practiced medicine in Africa, Europe, and the United States, with graduate medical training in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, in addition to Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. He also has formal qualifications in Public Health, Pediatric Cancer Epidemiology, Executive Physician Leadership, Implementation Science, and Health Cost Analysis.

Dr. Lubega's research interests focus on the mechanisms of malignant transformation of immune cells by infections (EBV, Herpes Viruses, HIV, Malaria, etc) and other immunological alterations that may result in lymphoma, histiocytosis and possibly leukemia. He is a zealous advocate for building capacity for pediatric cancer care and research in Africa.
