Personal Statement
I am board certified in both adult and pediatric critical care medicine and have been on faculty teaching and practicing both specialties since 2008, initially at the University of Miami and for the past decade at the University of Pittsburgh. During this time, I devoted a significant portion of my effort to translational research characterizing brain and heart injury, and evaluating protective therapies against them, after cardiac arrest. This consisted both of lab-based experimentation and two phase 1 and two phase 2 randomized clinical trials. I have been active in education, directing or co-directing fellowship training in cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology/mechanical ventilation, journal club/evidence-based medicine, a medical school resuscitation track and an American Heart Association funded undergraduate research program.
Beginning August 2020, I moved to Houston to help launch Texas Children’s Hospital’s unique and innovative adult congenital heart disease intensive care unit. I consider it a privilege and blessing to care for critically ill adults and children in Houston and to help train the next generation of critical care physician leaders.
