Get to know Anil P. George, MD
Dr. Anil George began his stem cell transplant fellowship training in 2019. Dr. Anil George completed his pediatric residency training in 2016 and his pediatric hematology/oncology training in 2019. He is board-certified in General Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Dr. George decided to pursue a career in pediatric hematology and oncology because he has a passion for providing personalized and empathic care to children with blood and cancer disorders. He is interested in studying how to integrate technology and combine laboratory discoveries to improve current and future treatment strategies.
Since the outset of his training experiences, Dr. George has had an interest in clinical research. His clinical research included using text-message reminders to improve rates of flu vaccine immunization in children with sickle cell disease and investigating whether propranolol premedication was safe and viable in improving how PET scans are performed in pediatric oncology patients. With an interest in children undergoing bone marrow transplant, Dr. George published a review paper highlighting the complications associated with patients who undergo bone marrow transplantation and cellular immunotherapy treatment to help guide healthcare providers with the diagnosis and management of these complications. Dr. George also published a review paper that provides an overview regarding biomarkers that are currently being used in cancer immunotherapy diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. George is interested in caring for children who are undergoing bone marrow transplantation as part of the treatment for their blood, cancer, immune, and genetic disorders.

Dr. Anil George's research interests include investigating the expression of immune checkpoint molecules on immune cells in children and young adult patients with acute leukemia.
The background for this research is that immunotherapy has emerged as a potential treatment option for children and young adults who either do not respond to conventional chemotherapy or suffer relapse related to their disease. Immunotherapy, however, is still in the early phases of development as researchers are investigating which patients will have a favorable response to immunotherapy and are identifying biomarkers that can be used to both predict and monitor a patient's response to treatment. Identifying these markers could also potentially serve as a target for therapy.
