Making A Mark® An Exhibition of Art by Children Touched by Cancer and Blood Disorders

Beginning in February of each year, professionals and volunteers work with children in the clinic to develop artwork or creative writing pieces that can be submitted to Making A Mark®, Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center's annual art exhibit presented by The Periwinkle Foundation. The extraordinary display features the works of young artists whose lives have been touched by cancer and blood disorders and provides a unique focus on their personal issues.

Making A Mark® encourages all patients and their siblings to participate in sharing their feelings through applied art or creative writing. Often deep-rooted feelings and fears are given a positive outlet. Every participant is a winner because so much has been gained in the process, and all submissions for the show are exhibited. More than 820 patients and their siblings from our clinic participate in the Arts in Medicine Program, free of charge every month.

Making A Mark® is open to children from all pediatric cancer treatment centers, and has attracted art and writing submissions from around the world. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we have been proud to display more than 300 entries each year since the first exhibit in September 1991. Past exhibits have been shown in Japan, Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, and numerous cities throughout the state of Texas. The success of Making A Mark® is evidenced by the yearly increase in applicants. Our goal is to continue broadening the base of volunteers to reach more children and continue to improve every aspect Making A Mark®.

This years Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center's Making a Mark® exhibit presented by The Periwinkle Foundation continues its annual tour with pieces exhibited at many different locations!
