Periwinkle Arts in Medicine Program

Become a Making A Mark® Artist

Making A Mark® is open to children from all treatment centers and has attracted submissions from around the world. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we have been proud to display more than 200 entries each year since the first exhibit in September 1991. The Periwinkle Foundation and Texas Children's Cancer & Hematology Center are pleased to invite you to take part in Making A Mark®; an exhibition of art and creative writing by children touched by cancer and blood disorders.

Since its debut in 1991, Making A Mark® annually displays more than 200 entries from children in treatment centers around the world. To highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, the opening exhibit at Texas Children's Hospital is the first stop on a journey to museums, hospitals, and airports throughout the United States. Your artwork will be a powerful part of an exhibit that spreads awareness and celebrates the triumphs of children battling cancer and blood disorders and their siblings.

Artwork should fall into one of the following categories: art (drawing, painting, computer-generated, collage); writing (poetry, stories, composition); sculpture (safely boxed for moving); crafts; and photography. Please do not write the artist's name on the front of the artwork. We will provide a plaque with the artist's name, age and title of work for display.

The artwork will not be returned to the artist and may be used in future displays. Texas Children's Cancer Center and The Periwinkle Foundation reserve all rights to the artwork entries and subsequent publications in print or for use electronically including on the internet, or any use of the artwork. Submissions may be included in the Purple Ribbon art show and competition. Our goal is to share your child's feelings and expressions of how cancer or blood disorders have touched his or her life. Please provide a brief description, to be included in the program, of how the artwork reflects your child's experience with cancer or blood disorders. Our hope is that your description will enhance the understanding of those who view it.

Eligibility Guidelines

Entries must be from children who have been treated for cancer or blood disorders, or from their brothers or sisters. Parents may enter works of children who have died of cancer or related blood disorders. Artwork and written expressions that have been published previously or displayed in Making A Mark are not eligible. Texas Children's Hospital and The Periwinkle Foundation reserver the rights to withhold entries that are not considered appropriate for display or that do not comply with the terms of Making A Mark®.

Submitting Artwork

You may enter only one piece of artwork per child each year. An entry form must be attached to each piece. If you submit a photograph, please make sure the people in the photograph know the picture will be on public display. Artwork will be displayed at the Making A Mark® opening exhibit. If you would like to enter your artwork in the Purple Ribbon competition, please indicate it on the entry form. Artwork for the Purple Ribbon competition will be judged according to age. Purple Ribbon selections may be used in T-shirt design, promotional materials and traveling shows. Judges for the Purple Ribbon competition are not employees of Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center or The Periwinkle Foundation. Artwork will not be returned and may be used in future displays. Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center and The Periwinkle Foundation reserve all rights to the artwork entries and subsequent publications in print or for use electronically including on the internet or any other use of the artwork.
