Multidisciplinary Obstructive Sleep Apnea (MOSA) Clinic

About the Multidisciplinary Obstructive Sleep Apnea (MOSA) Clinic

The Multidisciplinary Obstructive Sleep Apnea (MOSA) Clinic at Texas Children’s is a vital support system that provides essential assistance for pediatric patients who suffer with OSA.

Our team of experts create individualized treatment plans that help our patients optimize sleep, which in turn helps improve their overall health. Many children in our target population have comorbid complex medical and genetic conditions. These conditions include:

  • Genetic syndromes with craniofacial abnormalities (Apert, Crouzon, Pierre Robin, Pfeiffer)
  • Down syndrome
  • Persistent obstructive sleep apnea
  • Obesity
  • Difficulty tolerating continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine

We also treat patients with OSA who have no other conditions but have not responded to typical treatments, such as surgical intervention with ENT (tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A)) or positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy with sleep medicine.

Our Approach

The MOSA Clinic is a program of Texas Children’s Ear, Nose and Throat (Otolaryngology) Division and includes a team of advanced practice providers, a behavioral sleep psychologist, a nurse coordinator, a dietician, pulmonologists, respiratory therapists and Otolaryngology surgeons.

We offer our patients and their family advanced care for obstructive sleep apnea that is also cost effective. We coordinate care in one location, which decreases patient visits with subspecialists. We also help coordinate visits for out-of-town and international patients, which helps them save time, effort and travel costs.

In one visit, our specialists evaluate the patient, discuss their findings with the family, and determine the best individualized treatment plan Each family receives ongoing information from our program coordinator, nurses and doctors.

Innovative Treatments for OSA

Our team approach results in a better understanding of treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment may include both surgical and nonsurgical options.

Ear-Nose-Throat Surgery

  • Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) – a procedure that evaluates anatomy during sleep to help determine the best surgical option for the child
  • Hypoglossal nerve stimulation – an implanted device that stimulates the cranial nerve controlling tongue movement (Texas Children’s is currently participating in a multi-center research study following outcomes of these patients.)
  • Other soft-tissue ENT procedures

Nonsurgical Treatment

  • Treatment of medical conditions that impact sleep including allergic rhinitis, gastroesophageal reflux and asthma
  • Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy – mask fitting and psychological intervention that helps the patient increase their use of the PAP device
  • Weight Management
  • Treatment of other contributing sleep disorders including restless leg syndrome and insomnia
