Microtia and Atresia Program

The Microtia and Atresia Program at Texas Children’s Hospital has been caring for children with deformities of the inner and outer ear since 2008. In addition to best-in-class repair and reconstruction services, we offer a multidisciplinary team approach where we work closely with patients and their families to create personalized, comprehensive treatment plans.

A team of surgeons, audiologists, therapists and patient care coordinators provide the following diagnostic and assessment services:

  • Medical evaluation of patients with microtia and aural atresia
  • Behavioral audiograms
  • Natural sleep and sedated auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests
  • Hearing aid consultations
  • Fitting and programming of bone conduction devices and conventional hearing aids
  • Consultations with other medical and surgical specialties as needed
  • Onsite radiology and laboratory services
  • Discussion of an individualized plan of care for each patient
  • Dedicated coordinator to facilitate follow-up tests and appointments

Our otolaryngologists (ENTs) and plastic surgeons work hand-in-hand to provide highly specialized surgical solutions for microtia patients, including:

  • Microtia reconstruction
  • Aural atresia repair
  • Bone conduction device implantation
  • Otoplasty for protruding ears and other deformities
  • Ear splinting (molding)
