Texas Children’s Liver Center is the largest pediatric liver disease program in the South and among the largest in the United States. Our highly-skilled pediatric surgeons and specialists are committed to providing clinical care to children with all forms of pediatric liver disease, evaluating and treating the tiniest premature infants to young adults.

Pediatric specialists at Texas Children's Liver Center provide assessment, treatment and comprehensive follow-up care for a wide variety of disorders that impact normal liver function. These include:

  • Biliary atresia and other inherited hepatobiliary malformations
  • Metabolic and genetic liver diseases such as glycogen storage disease, tyrosinemia, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Wilson disease, PFIC, mitochondrial diseases, Alagille syndrome
  • Infections of the liver including acute and chronic hepatitis A, B and C
  • Autoimmune hepatitis, sclerosing cholangitis and other immune-mediated disorders
  • Liver complications from chronic conditions such as short gut syndrome in premature infants , cystic fibrosis and congenital heart malformations

Our team strives to provide the highest-level of care to our patients and their families. Our multidisciplinary team includes hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, transplant surgery, liver specialized pediatric intensive care physicians, pediatric anesthesiologist, infectious disease specialist, radiologist, pathologists, transplant immunologist, nurse practitioners, transplant coordinators, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacist, social worker, child life specialist, psychologist, financial counselor among all other subspecialties and supportive staff at Texas Children's.  

Our team specializes in advanced endocscopy:  band ligation, sclerotherapy, ERCP. We are one of the few centers in the US that offers extracorporeal liver support such as MARS  and TP.  

The interventional radiology team performs liver biopsies   (percutaneous, transjugular), TIPPS, biliary drains, angioplasty  

Our surgical team performs Kasai portoenerostomy, liver resections, hepatobiliary surgeries and partial external biliary diversions.   

Our liver transplantation team had performed nearly 500 transplant including whole organ, reduced-liver, living donor and split-liver transplants in children ranging from infancy to young adults.

Cutting-edge clinical research

Texas Children's Liver Center is one of the few pediatric liver centers in the country with a fully-equipped, state-of-the-art research laboratory dedicated to basic and clinical research aimed at improving the care and outcomes for children with liver disease. We are among only a handful of centers in the nation and the only one in Texas that participate in multiple National Institute of Health-sponsored protocols. We are members of SPLIT and collaborate on dozens of multicenter trials. We participate in novel pharmaceutical trials, such as drugs to treat chronic hepatitis B and C, itching in chronic liver disease. We are committed to the highest level of quality assessment and performance improvement with dozens of internal research projects

For those patients who require surgical intervention, Texas Children’s Liver Center's pediatric surgeons perform liver resections, bile duct resections, tumor extractions and liver transplantation including living donor and in-situ split liver transplants. All aspects of pre- and post-liver transplant care are provided in a state-of-the-art setting using the latest technological advances.
