Houston Chronicle with Dr. John Goss: On 9/11, a chain of strangers moved heaven and earth to save a Houston baby. They succeeded.

So, nine Guardsmen boarded a C-130 Hercules, an aircraft that can carry up to 47,000 pounds, and took off for Houston to deliver that tiny liver. They landed at Ellington Field within a few hours and handed off the donor organ to another group of soldiers at noon that day. 

After a short drive up Interstate 45 in a military vehicle, the liver arrived at Texas Children’s, where Dr. John Goss was waiting to transplant the organ into Kareena. By that evening, Kareena was on a path toward a normal life.

“Even though there was the horrific event and it was meant to hurt a lot of people, there were still very good people who were not going to let it completely hurt us,” Goss said. “In the end, the good will win.”
