Visiting a patient on the Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Unit
Visitation check-in procedures
All visitors must check-in at the reception area in the clinic or the nurse’s station on the inpatient unit. A member of the staff will check if the patient is ready for visitors. Parents and legal guardians may visit at any time.
Maximum number of visitors
Although our patients may have more than one visitor, it is the policy of the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)/Stem Cell Transplant Unit that only two visitors, including parents, will be allowed in the patient’s room at any given time. Any remaining visitors must wait in the West Tower lobby on the first floor. Effective patient care and cleanliness are at an increased likelihood of being compromised when patient rooms become crowded.
Overnight visitors
Patients may have overnight visitors, but only one visitor may stay overnight with the child. All overnight visitors must be over the age of 18. It is important that the patient is able to get adequate rest overnight.
Supervision of child visitors
Although there is no age limit for visitors to the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)/Stem Cell Transplant Unit, young children present a greater risk of carrying a contagious disease. There is an appointed visiting time for young siblings. It is the parents’ responsibility to screen young siblings or other children visiting the patient for any signs of illness that may be contagious. This is because patients who have undergone or are about to undergo a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant can have serious, even life-threatening complications if they get sick. To prevent the spread of infection, siblings and young children are not allowed to visit any area of the Stem Cell Transplant unit except the patient’s room. We ask that all child visitors remain supervised by their parents at all times.
Infection-control
Visitors with any signs and symptoms of contagious diseases or infections are not permitted to enter the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)/Stem Cell Transplant Unit. Signs and symptoms of contagious diseases or infections may include: fever, runny nose, sore throat, eye discharge, pink eye, cold or flu-like symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, skin rash or recent exposure to a contagious disease. To provide protection from the spread of infectious diseases, patients’ visiting between inpatient rooms or the clinic is not permitted.
