Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding support

You can give your baby the best start in life by breastfeeding, and we’re here to offer you all the support you need to achieve your feeding goals. Studies show that exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months provides the greatest benefit, but any time you spend breastfeeding will benefit you and your baby.

You’ll have a nurse with you in your private mother-baby room at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women. The nurse will help you with breastfeeding techniques. She also encourages skin-to-skin contact between you and your baby, which studies show helps breastfeeding go more smoothly.

Schedule a class or a tour

Our mission is to make sure you have everything you need for a successful breastfeeding experience — whatever that means for you. We offer breastfeeding classes so you’ll be prepared once you deliver your baby. Tours of the Labor and Delivery facilities are also available.

Breastfeeding health benefits for you and your baby

Benefits for baby

Breast milk produces essential nutrients your baby needs to grow and develop. Your milk also contains infection-fighting cells and other benefits not available in formula that give your baby:

  • Enhanced brain growth and development
  • Lower risk of ear infections, diarrhea, meningitis and respiratory infections
  • Lower risk of asthma and eczema
  • Lower risk of juvenile-onset diabetes and childhood obesity

Benefits for mom

Breastfeeding provides lasting benefits for mothers as well as babies, such as:

  • Decreased risk of ovarian and premenopausal breast cancers
  • A special bonding time for you and your baby to be together
  • Burning extra calories to make breast milk, which may help you lose weight after pregnancy
  • Saving money on formula
