The International Observers Program is designed for selected physicians and healthcare professionals who practice and study medicine in other countries and have a strong desire to learn about pediatric medicine with the aim of promoting the improvement of pediatric health care in their home countries.
The program is not designed for physicians pursuing residency positions in the U.S.
Guidelines
Permitted Activities:
Attend institutional conferences and lectures
Observe clinical activities with the approval of the relevant clinical affiliate
Attend rounds
Activities NOT Permitted:
Touch or evaluate patients § Administer treatment or render services to patients
Participate in decisions concerning patient management; write orders or notes in patient charts; or give orders verbally
Participate as a member of a patient’s clinical care team (in observer role only) without the patient’s permission
Engage in research
Requirements
A reference letter from the dean of the medical school as proof of professional good standing as a physician or healthcare provider in an internationally approved medical school or medical institution recognized by the program director
Proof of compliance with immunization requirements of Texas Children’s
Must sign release of liability and have/purchase adequate health insurance
Fluency in both written and spoken English
Limited to 30 days unless pre-approved
International Observerships are not designed for the following purposes:
“Trying out” for clinical training programs
Offering opportunities to network for future training or employment
Providing activities for curriculum vitaes
Providing research or laboratory experience
Allowing international observers reportable activity while in the US for other reason
Policies
All international observers should arrange housing accommodations prior to arrival
Visas must be obtained individually
Texas Children’s is unable to sponsor any type of visas
A Confidentiality Agreement is required to be signed prior to the start of program
