An insulin pump is a small computerized device that delivers insulin through a thin tube under the skin. It releases insulin the way your body works — a steady flow throughout the day and night, with extra doses at mealtime to handle the extra blood sugar from the foods you eat. You program the pump for the number of meals you eat. If you know you’re going to eat more than usual, you can program a larger mealtime dose to cover the carbs in your meal.
