Single-Incision Hysterectomy

Conditions

A single-incision hysterectomy is surgery to remove a woman’s uterus through a single incision in the belly button.

This minimally invasive procedure is the latest advancement in laparoscopic hysterectomies, which typically involve up to five small incisions in the abdomen and belly button.

Laparoscopic hysterectomies are recommended over traditional open surgery, whenever possible, avoiding the need for a large abdominal incision.

Patient Benefits

Single-incision hysterectomies offer numerous advantages compared to traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopic surgery, including:

  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster recovery and return to normal activities
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Lower rates of infection and venous thromboembolism (blood clots in the legs and lungs)
  • Fewer complications
  • More cosmetically appealing, with a single, barely visible scar in the belly button

How It Works

In a single-incision hysterectomy, the uterus is removed in pieces by inserting a small scope and surgical instruments through a single incision in the belly button. A miniature camera on the end of the scope transmits images to high-definition monitors, enabling the surgeon to view inside the patient and perform the procedure with clarity and precision.

Single-incision hysterectomies can also be performed robotically using the da Vinci Surgical System.

Know Your Options

Not all women are candidates for a single-incision hysterectomy. Talk with your OB/GYN about your treatment options and preferences.

Conditions Treated

A single-incision hysterectomy may be used to treat:

  • Uterine prolapse or pelvic support problems (fallen or sagging organs)
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps
  • Endometriosis
  • Endometrial hyperplasia (pre-cancerous cells in the lining of the uterus)
  • Uterine and cervical cancer for some patients
  • Severe menstrual cramps that do not improve with more conservative therapies
