The frontal bone is the bone of the forehead. The frontal sinus is an air-filled cavity that forms within the frontal bone. This sinus starts to form around the age of 4 years.
Fractures involving the frontal bone or the frontal sinus should be evaluated promptly by a craniofacial surgeon and/or a neurosurgeon. In some situations where the bones have not moved significantly, injuries to the frontal bone/sinus do not require surgery. However, if there is significant displacement, surgery may be needed. Surgery may involve repairing the anterior table of the frontal bone, obliterating the frontal sinus, or cranializing the frontal sinus. In obliteration and cranialization, the frontal sinus is removed to decrease the risk of future infection.
