Personal Statement
Dr. Daniel H. Leung is a Professor of Pediatrics within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine where he serves as Director of Pediatric Hepatology and Liver Transplant Medicine and the Director of the Viral Hepatitis Program at Texas Children's Hospital. He is a clinician-scientist with broad expertise in the field of pediatric hepatology who has devoted his career to the study and care of children with chronic fibroinflammatory and cholestatic liver diseases and as Director of Clinical Research within the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition from 2016-2019. He has unique expertise in the areas of liver fibrosis, biomarker indices within pediatric liver disease, and pediatric portal hypertension and has helped spearhead a translational NIH-funded collaboration in the area of fibrosis biomarkers (5U01 DK103149-04S, Clinical Center for ChiLDREN: Pathogenesis, Biomarkers, and Antifibrotic Therapy) which he oversees within the parent ChiLDReN FORCE study (FibroScan™ in Pediatric Cholestatic Liver Disease).
Dr. Leung is also devoted to the cure and treatment of children affected by hepatitis B and C and cystic fibrosis-related (CF) gastrointestinal and liver disease. He served as Lead Co-Principal Investigator for a multi-center observational longitudinal study of infants diagnosed with CF by newborn screening (BONUS) funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has been the center Principal Investigator for the NIH funded Cystic Fibrosis Liver Disease (CLFD) Network: Prediction by Ultrasound of the risk of Hepatic Cirrhosis in CF (PUSH) study since 2010. Dr. Leung is board certified by the American Board of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and a Fellow of the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases.
