While over 80% of children with cancer in high-income settings such as the United States survive their cancer, <10% of children in the world’s poorest countries will survive. Besides seeing patients, Dr. McAtee uses grant funding to conduct clinical and epidemiological research on cancers affecting children in these parts of the world. He specifically focuses on HIV-related malignancies and leukemias. He is most interested in describing the unique presentations of cancer affecting African children, as well as designing treatment protocols adapted specifically for the resource-limited settings where he works.
