About

Dr. Leung is director of the Viral Hepatitis Program at Texas Children's Hospital and also serves as Director of Clinical Research within Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. His research interests are focused on the epidemiology and treatment of children affected by hepatitis B and C. The Viral Hepatitis Program is developing the most current and evidence-based diagnostic and treatment protocols for children with hepatitis B and C while also providing necessary counseling to patients and their families. It also serves as the site of several state-of-the-art treatment studies for hepatitis B and C in children. In the spring/summer of 2017, we will be launching 2 new clinical trials for patients with immune clearant and immune tolerant hepatitis B and 2 new all-oral direct acting antiviral studies for patients with hepatitis C.

He also has a particular interest in gastrointestinal and liver diseases associated with cystic fibrosis (CF). He served as Lead Co-Principal Investigator for a multi-center observational longitudinal study of infants diagnosed with CF by newborn screening (BONUS) funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and currently is the center Principal Investigator for the NIH funded Cystic Fibrosis Liver Disease (CLFD) Network: Prediction by Ultrasound of the risk of Hepatic Cirrhosis in CF (PUSH) study and co-investigator on an RO1 grant focused on the intestinal microbiome of CF infants. He remains active as a local co-investigator of the ChiLDReN (The Childhood Liver Disease Research and Education Network) with diverse expertise and interests in non-invasive markers of fibrosis and portal hypertension (See interview at http://aasldpubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)2046-2484/video/9-5-interview-leung.html).
