Welcome Letter from Dr. Blaney

When parents discover that their child requires treatment for cancer or a blood disorder, it is one of life's most difficult moments. Most parents never consider the possibility their child might be touched by these tragic circumstances.

Unfortunately, childhood cancer remains the leading cause of non-accidental death in children in the United States. However, great strides have been made in the treatment of childhood cancer and in the outcomes for children who are diagnosed with cancer as well as blood disorders. Approximately one in every 250 adults under age 55 has survived childhood cancer-providing much hope for both pediatric cancer patients and their parents.

Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, world renowned for its clinical care, research and education, offers innovative therapies for all forms of childhood cancer and blood disorders. Physician-scientists at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center are working relentlessly to improve the outcome for all patients afflicted with these diseases and to develop and perfect new treatment approaches that emanate from some of their most extraordinary scientific insights and discoveries.

Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center combines the strengths of Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Texas Children's Hospital is the largest freestanding pediatric medical facility in the United States; an internationally recognized, licensed 705-bed, full-care pediatric hospital located in the Texas Medical Center; the pediatric teaching hospital of BCM; and home to the College's full-time pediatric faculty. BCM is consistently ranked among the top 20 in federal research funding among medical schools in the United States. Physician-scientists on the BCM faculty, who provide patient care at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, are at the forefront of medical research. This means our patients have the distinct advantage of receiving the most advanced, state-of-the-art medical treatments from highly skilled pediatric cancer treatment experts.  Of note, Texas Children’s Cancer Center houses the pediatric program of The Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, which is Baylor College of Medicine's NCI-designated cancer center.

The mission of Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center is to provide personalized, high quality, family-centered care to children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and blood disorders; to discover and implement innovative laboratory research and treatment advances aimed at curing and preventing childhood cancer and blood disorders; and to provide world-class training and education for current and future leaders in the field.
