We are a proud member of the Simulation Education Network (SEN). The SEN is a network of ASA-endorsed simulation programs offering courses that entirely satisfy the 5-year ABA MOCA 2.0 Part 4 requirement. These courses are designed to realistically recreate challenging clinical cases to allow participants to problem‐solve in a manner that is similar to actual clinical experiences.
The ABA and the ASA developed endorsement criteria for simulation centers. Simulation at an ASA-endorsed center became a MOCA® Part 4: Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement requirement in 2008 and nearly 3,000 ABA diplomates have participated in these courses.
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) is responsible for implementing MOC for anesthesiologists. To find out more about MOCA and the details of requirements please visit the ABA website, email questions to: moca@theABA.org or call 866-999-7501.
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers from the ABA/ASA About Simulation Courses Offered for Part IV MOCA® Credit can be viewed here.
For MOCA 2.0 Part 4, diplomates are required to earn 25 points every five years, for a total of 50 points over 10 years.
Completion of this one-day simulation course [at an ASA-Endorsed Simulation Center] AND follow-up materials results in automatic reporting of this activity to the ABA and fulfills your 5-year requirement.
We are pleased to provide you with a new American Heart Association (AHA), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider card as part of this MOCA Simulation Course. Texas Children’s Hospital is an AHA Training Center; your new AHA PALS Provider card, which is valid for 2 years, will be provided to you electronically, via email, approximately 2 days after the Course. All costs for the AHA PALS Provider card are included in the tuition. The AHA PALS HeartCode Course is divided into an online portion and an in-person testing session.
In order to be eligible to receive the AHA PALS Provider card, you MUST successfully complete the AHA PALS HeartCode on-line module prior to the course as well as provide a copy to us. The in-person testing session will be incorporated into the simulation course. The on-line AHA PALS HeartCode module takes approximately 6-10 hours to complete; please plan accordingly. We will provide you with the electronic key to access the AHA PALS HeartCode module.
If a learner chooses to not want to renew their PALS certification or fails to provide an AHA PALS HeartCode module completion certificate, they WILL be able to complete the MOCA course and receive full ABA and CME credits but they will not be eligible to receive a new AHA PALS Provider card. Please feel free to e-mail the Course Director with any questions regarding AHA PALS recertification.
“Throughout residency, pediatric anesthesia fellowship, seven years of military service, and now five years of my current hybrid private/academic practice, I have had a passion for simulation training for our specialty and ability to drastically improve care for the life-threatening scenarios we need to be prepared for yet rarely encounter. For this reason, twelve years into my total practice time and maintenance of certification, this was my 3rd ASA MOCA Endorsed Simulation Course and the best I have attended. Under the direction of Dr. David Young, the Texas Children's Hospital MOCA Simulation Course was superb! During my recent session, Dr. Young was the lead instructor and assisted by two outstanding TCH/Baylor College of Medicine pediatric anesthesia colleagues--Dr. Ali Hassanpour and Dr. Lisa Caplan. Dr. Young's course format, efficient teaching, and scenario pauses with expert insights and redirection were valuable for all learners. As a full time pediatric anesthesiologist, I was particularly drawn to this pediatric specific MOCA course as they are very limited. For me it was invaluable and was similarly regarded by my fellow attendees with little pediatric care in their diverse adult specific practices. I hope this center remains at the forefront of MOCA Simulation Training as I think it will continue to advance my personal and group's practice in the years to come with refresher attendance and different scenarios.”
Joshua DuBois, M.D. (San Antonio, Texas)
"My experience during the TCH MOCA Simulation course was fantastic! Despite a compact agenda, 6 learners and the challenge of being tested all day, it was not what I initially expected. The experienced (4) instructors turned the day into a very reflective and positive experience from which to learn from each other, providing CRM tools, in an organized and non-threating environment. The motivation and fulfilment of performing at our prime, generates an incredible effect of growth as a person. The reflection gained by evaluation of our performance including errors and positives, with colleagues has helped me become a better professional."
Carlos Campos, M.D (Houston, Texas).
"I just wanted to let you know that my TCH pediatric MOCA simulation course went far beyond my expectations and I came away with new information and ways to help my daily practice. The CRM tools, the experienced and organized instructors, and all the real-life scenarios truly helped me. I learned that even though I have been in practice for nearly 30 years, I had areas of growth as leader in a code or everyday stressful patient situations.
I thought the combination of PALS with the pediatric MOCA simulation was very beneficial. I know that my attendance will help me be a better anesthesiologist."
Rebecca Layton, M.D. (Louisville, Kentucky)
