What Causes Snapping Hip?

Snapping Hip occurs when your child hears or feels a “snapping” in his or her hip when they walk, run, or swing their leg. Snapping Hip usually occurs from a muscle or tendon that moves over a bony structure (which causes that snapping sound and sensation). Your child may feel symptoms in the front, side, or inner part of his or her thigh with physical activity.

How is Snapping Hip Diagnosed?

The doctor will ask about your child’s health history and examine your child. He or she will check your child’s hip for tenderness and pain, as well as examine the range of motion and strength of your child’s hip. An X-ray or MRI may also be done. These tests take images of the inside of the body. They help the doctor diagnose the injury.

Snapping Hip can be treated with a variety of methods. Your child’s doctor may prescribe a home exercise program, which includes several stretches of the hip, as well as strengthening exercises for your child’s hip. Your doctor may also recommend modification of activity during the initial phases of healing. Ice and anti-inflammatories are also another method of treatment for Snapping Hip.
