Overview
When fluid accumulates in the abdomen it is called ascites. If this fluid amount becomes large or accumulates quickly it can cause a lot of discomfort.
Symptoms and History
Abdominal fullness and discomfort are common symptoms with ascites.
Diagnosis
The reason for ascites will sometimes be known from an already diagnosed condition. If the cause of ascites is unknown it may require lab tests to be performed on the fluid in the abdomen. Ultrasound can be used to identify ascites and assess amount and complexity.
Treatment
Depending on the cause of ascites there are medications that can help alleviate the symptoms. If that is not sufficient it may be required to remove the fluid either with needle aspiration or drain.
