The Cain Laboratories are supported by the Gordon and Mary Cain Pediatric Neurology Research Foundation, established in 1988 by senior executives of the Houston-based companies founded by the late Gordon Cain. Dr. John Swann served as Cain Labs director until his retirement in 2022, and Dr. Sameer Sheth, a neuroscientist and adult neurosurgeon, is the current director.

My goal is to expand the labs' vision to include systems-level neuroscience and neuromodulation approaches so that we aspire not only to cure those childhood epilepsies that are curable, but also to treat several of the cognitive, emotional, and psychiatric comorbidities from which these patients suffer.
Dr. Sameer Sheth is a neuroscientist and adult neurosurgeon with 17 years of experience treating patients with epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, and movement disorders. He founded and directed the Functional and Cognitive Neurophysiology Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine, which focuses on the study of human decision-making, behavior, and cognitive processes, and his groundbreaking research has been continuously funded by numerous grants from the NIH for over 12 years.
